Exclusive: Crystal Palace hit by new Jean-Philippe Mateta blow

Crystal Palace may not be able to convince Jean-Philippe Mateta to stay at the club even if they offer him more money, sources have told Football Insider.

Back in June, it was revealed that Crystal Palace were in talks with Mateta about signing a contract extension, with his current deal set to end in 2027.

The Frenchman has started the season superbly well amid negotiations, scoring six goals in his first 12 Premier League games.

However, Mateta is now unhappy with the money on offer in his potential new deal, although sources say that wage demands may not be the only stumbling block.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has ambitions away from Crystal Palace

Sources say that Mateta has ambitions to play in the Champions League in the near future, which may be another factor behind the difficulties in contract negotiations with Crystal Palace.

This is a huge worry for Palace, as even if they did up their wage offer, the French international may still decide that he wants a move away.

If Mateta were to become available, then he would have a host of high-quality clubs queuing up for his signature.

The 28-year-old is reportedly interested in a move to the Serie A at some point in his career, so could look at making the switch to Italy.

A number of Premier League outfits would also be in the race to sign Mateta, given his proven ability to score goals in the English top-flight.

Tottenham eye up Jean-Philippe Mateta

At the end of last month, Football Insider revealed that Tottenham were keeping tabs on Mateta going into the January window.

Thomas Frank is eager to bolster his attacking options with Spurs linked with some of the world’s best goal scorers.

Tottenham have had major problems at centre-forward in recent times, with Dominic Solanke out injured and others not performing.

Despite scoring against Arsenal, Richarlison has come in for some criticism this season and is not seen as the answer to Frank’s issues.

Randal Kolo-Muani is now also facing a spell on the sidelines, increasing the need for Spurs to bring in a new striker.

Therefore, the North London side could make a move for Mateta if his contract situation at Crystal Palace continues to drag on.
