Danny Mills is confident that Newcastle United will be able to hold on to their star players despite the exit of Rafael Benitez.

The likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Ayoze Perez, Jonjo Shelvey, Fabian Schar and Miguel Almiron could be targeted by leading Premier League and European clubs following the end of Benitez’s three-and-a-half year spell at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Mills explained how many of the players will have joined Newcastle partly because of the Spanish manager but that does not mean they will now be sold.

“I think they will be able to keep them,” he said. “They are not in a financial crisis where they need to sell. Mike Ashley is shrewd enough to look at it and run it as a business.

“Mike Ashley doesn’t need to sell and can keep his best players. It then depends on which managers come in and who he wants.

“I don’t think there is a brilliant player at Newcastle who lots of top clubs will want. There’s no-one in that squad who makes you say, ‘wow, he’s irreplaceable’. Who are the stars in that team?

“You have a nucleus of a decent squad and it needs three or four quality signings this summer. There no-one who can’t be replaced.”

Mills’ verdict will go down very well with Newcastle supporters, who have been extremely critical of how owner Mike Ashley operates the club.

The majority of the fanbase is desperate for the Sports Direct tycoon to sell the club and for far more ambitious owners to take the reins.

Takeover speculation has intensified since the end of the domestic season but there has yet to be a breakthrough in negotiations.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in pole position to sign a big name after a major transfer development.
