Exclusive: Danny Mills reacts as Leeds make formal move to sign £50K-a-wk star

Danny Mills urged Leeds United to go all out in their pursuit of Southampton attacker Che Adams following Eddie Nketiah’s departure.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Leeds defender admitted it was very important that Leeds sign a replacement for Nketiah quickly as Patrick Bamford needs the competition.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had made a formal move on Thursday to sign Adams from the Premier League club for the second half of the campaign.

Mills explained that with the 23-year-old being a proven goalscorer in the Championship then he may be capable of firing the Whites to the Premier League.

When asked if Leeds have to throw everything they have at getting Adams as Nketiah needs to be replaced quickly, Mills told Football Insider: “Yeah, I think it’s very important now with the position that Leeds are in.

“A good point against West Brom, top of the league on New Year’s day, and hopefully that gives Leeds a real chance to push on and win promotion.

“We need that bit of competition for Patrick Bamford, that plan B, that back-up for Bamford which Nketiah hasn’t really been this season.

“Maybe a proven goalscorer in the Championship, an out-and-out goalscorer like Adams may be what finally fires Leeds to the Holy Grail of the Premier League.”

Bielsa confirmed on New Year’s Day that Nketiah had seen his loan spell from Arsenal cut short, with the 20-year-old managing to score only five goals in 18 appearances for the club.

When Adams was in the Championship during his 2018/19 campaign, the current Saints forward racked up 22 league goals in 46 outings.

Football Insider has been told by a Southampton source that he is on a £50,000-a-week contract that runs until the summer of 2024.
