Aston Villa will have two very good goalkeepers if they complete the signing of Emiliano Martinez, according to Danny Mills.
The former England full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed Villa may have been scarred by their goalkeeping situation at the back end of last season.
Last season’s first-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton is still out with a knee injury picked up on New Years Day and has targeted Villa’s game away at Leicester City on October 17 for his return.
Orjan Nyland and Pepe Reina shared the gloves following Heaton’s injury last season as Villa avoided relegation by just a point.
Asked Football Insider who will be Villa’s number one when Heaton regains fitness, Mills said: “It’s difficult isn’t it because Martinez has done very, very well at Arsenal but Tom Heaton, I think is exceptional.
“He’s been fabulous and he’s incredibly unlucky with injuries.
“At one point you had Tom Heaton, Nick Pope and Joe Hart at Burnley and that’s three incredible goalkeepers.
“Joe Hart is a fantastic number two, if not number one and he was probably third choice with all of that.
“Maybe they’re a little bit concerned with what happened at the end of last season.
“Maybe they’re thinking (with Heaton’s injury) ‘look, the end of October could easily go into November and does he come back fit? What’s his form like when he comes back?’
“They probably took the long-term view that ‘we need a goalkeeper’ and if they end up with two very good goalkeepers so be it, we’ll deal with that issue when we come to it.”
