Darren Bent has had a brutal dig at Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko by claiming a top midfielder needs to do “more than just run around”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker hailed Sissoko for turning around his career at the club with a “brilliant” 2018-19 campaign.
But Bent pointed out how the club-record signing of Tanguy Ndombele has completely changed the picture in midfield at Tottenham as well as intensifying competition for places.
“Sissoko has done really, really well,” Bent told Football Insider. “Don’t get me wrong, last season he was brilliant for Spurs. But I think, as a midfielder sometimes, you need a little bit more than just run around.
“He does about four peoples’ running, will get there, make a tackle. But, at the end of the day, you need that bit of quality, someone to score, someone to assist, and he didn’t do it last season.
“So I think that if you have someone there, that anchor like Ndombele, who can move about, you’ll see the best of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.”
Sissoko will be competing with Ndombele, signed from Lyon for £54million rising to a potential £63million, as well as Harry Winks and Eric Dier for a place in central midfield.
The France international, 30, emerged as a big fan favourite for his wholehearted displays last season and his Tottenham teammates chanted his name in the dressing room in the aftermath of the momentous Champions League victory over Manchester City.
