Darren Bent has predicted that Leeds United will be firmly in the running for promotion again this season despite selling so many of their players.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England international tipped Marcelo Bielsa’s side to finish in the top three if they can make one or two additions late in the window.
United have sold a number of key players this summer, most notably Pontus Jansson but also Jack Clarke, who has re-signed on loan, and Bailey Peacock-Farrell, while Kemar Roofe is on the verge of joining Anderlecht.
But Bent believes Bielsa’s team can put a difficult window behind them to once again challenge strongly for promotion.
“I said last season that whoever finished above Leeds would get promoted, and that proved to be the case,” Bent told Football Insider. “I think it will be the same again, and they can have another very good season.
“I can see them challenging hard for promotion and finishing in the top three again, but they need to strengthen and bring in one or two before the window shuts.”
Leeds finished third in last season’s Championship after leading the division for much of the campaign before a late collapse.
They were defeated in the play-offs by Derby County in a thrilling semi-final as Aston Villa secured the final promotion spot alongside Sheffield United and champions Norwich City.
In other Leeds United news, Marcelo Bielsa is freezing out senior outfield international and wants him gone this month.
