Darren Bent claims that Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa will have a new signing in the pipeline as he prepares for Kemar Roofe’s imminent departure from Elland Road.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England hitman says that he does not expect Leeds to let their star forward go on the opening weekend of the Championship season without having a plan in place.
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider, the 26-year-old is set to undergo a medical imminently at the Jupiler League outfit before completing his move.
Bent says that Leeds must have someone in mind or even something in the pipeline to let Roofe depart, admitting he found the striker’s decision to swap England for Belgium a strange one.
Asked if he understood Roofe’s thinking, Bent told Football Insider: “No, not really. To go to Anderlecht, I can’t quite see the link there. I’m sure he wants to play at what he feels is a top European side, they play in the top division in Belgium.
“The offers might not be there in the Premier League and as a striker he might feel this is the best offer he has. It’s a really strange one, I would have never put them two together.
“You’d have to think there’s no way they’d let him go at this stage without having a deal lined up or someone through the door before they let him go. You’d have to think Bielsa’s clever enough to think they can’t sit without a replacement. If a deal does go through, I’m sure Bielsa will have someone he can bring in.”
Roofe’s departure will leave Patrick Bamford as Bielsa’s only experience centre forward at Elland Road, young pair Tyler Roberts and Ryan Edmondson likely to be next in line in the first-team squad.
In other Leeds United news, Marcelo Bielsa is freezing out senior outfield international and wants him gone this month.
