Darren Bent has tipped Jermain Defoe to “easily” score more than 30 goals for Rangers this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international and ex-teammate of Defoe is in no doubt that the 36-year-old will score prolifically after a slow start to life at Ibrox.
The veteran striker joined Rangers in January on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth in a move that was viewed by many as a gamechanger in the title race.
It did not prove that way as Defoe initially struggled for game time before getting a regular run, with his 20 Rangers matches yielding eight goals and seven assists.
“He got off to quite a slow start, it was tough for him because [Alfredo] Morelos was playing week in, week out,” Bent told Football Insider. “I know Jermain really, really well, one of the most professional players you will ever, ever meet.
“He’s 36, ripped, always doing his extra work. He’s like a kid on the training ground, always working on his finishing, always applying his trade really, really well and it doesn’t surprise me that he’s still going strong.
“I think you’ll see Jermain a lot more this season, I think he might even start the season and if he starts the season for them and he starts scoring they’ll never get him out the team.
“He might get a rest here and there, as I said father time will catch up with all of us, but with him, if he gets that team early and starts scoring goals – if he plays the full season up there he’ll score 30-plus easy.”
Rangers get their Europa League qualifying campaign underway on Tuesday night with the away first leg of their first round encounter against St Joseph’s in Gibraltar.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club are in pole position to sign a player tipped to ‘be worth £20million next year’.
