Exclusive: Eddie Howe issues Sandro Tonali transfer demand to Newcastle

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will demand any fee received for Sandro Tonali is reinvested entirely into the playing squad, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (23 December) that the Magpies could reluctantly consider offers for the 24-year-old midfielder next summer.

Tonali is attracting interest from Serie A giants Juventus and it is believed a big offer would be carefully considered by Newcastle.

A January exit for the 21-cap star is completely out of the question for Howe, who is keen to keep the midfielder.

However, the Tyneside giants remain unable to spend to their full potential and the Italy international could be sacrificed eventually to free up much-needed funds.

However, the English boss will insist that he is given the right tools to replace the midfielder should he demand St James’ Park.

He has made no secret of his frustration about the spending limitations in recent windows, with Newcastle failing to land top target Marc Guehi in the off-season.

Howe keen to keep Tonali at Newcastle

Howe has also taken a shine to Tonali in recent weeks having bedded him back into the side slowly following his 10-month ban for gambling rule breaches.

The former AC Milan midfielder has played the full 90 minutes in the last three fixtures against Leicester, Brentford and Ipswich – playing a key role in three consecutive victories.

He has played just 30 times for the Magpies in total – contributing three goals and two assists.

Newcastle paid a reported £55million to bring Tonali to the club from Milan last year (2023) and he is under contract at St James’ Park until June 2028.
