Exclusive: Everton 23-yr-old shouldn't be at the club next season - Whelan

Noel Whelan has urged Everton to allow Jonjoe Kenny to remain on loan at Bundesliga side Schalke for another season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker suggested that it could prove beneficial to the Toffees in the long run to let the 23-year-old develop his game further in Germany for another year.

According to Bild, the full-back has settled well with his new side, and is keen to extend his stay on the continent beyond the end of the season.

And Whelan believes it could be a wise decision to grant him his wish.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think they’re probably better off keeping him out there, giving him another season where he’s actually settled at the minute.

“It’d be another season in the Bundesliga where he’s learning his trade and progressing. That’s the more sensible thing to do.

“I think when a player has seems to be doing well and has settled well, is playing football in a good competitive league, it’d only benefit Everton better to bring him in, probably after next season.

“Assess him, see how he’s doing, it might even be a case of bringing him back at Christmas. There’s no reason why that can’t happen.

“I think sometimes bringing a player back when he’s just settled in somewhere might be more detrimental than good.”

Kenny has amassed 40 first team appearances for the Toffees since making his first team debut in 2016.

So far this season, he has featured 26 times for Schalke in all competitions, scoring one goal and registering three assists from right-back.
