Exclusive: Everton in advanced talks to agree David Weir deal

Everton are in advanced talks to appoint Brighton’s David Weir as their new sporting director, sources have told Football Insider.

Toffees boss David Moyes is pushing hard for the return to Goodison Park of his former captain.

The club have not yet wrapped up a full agreement for transfer guru Weir, 54, but a deal is believed to be close.

He played for Everton between 1999 and 2007, making 266 appearances for the club before leaving for Rangers.

Weir then returned to Goodison Park in 2012 in a coaching capacity with the club’s reserve and academy sides.

Everton close in on Weir appointment

The former Scotland international defender has since transitioned into a backroom role at Brighton after further spells with Sheffield United, Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest as a coach.

He was initially appointed as the Seagulls’ loan manager but ascended to the technical director role in 2022.

Weir replaced Dan Ashworth – who left the Amex Stadium to join Newcastle United.

Kevin Thelwell is the club’s current director of football but The Friedkin Group (TFG) are eyeing an extensive overhaul following their mega-money takeover in recent months.

Carlos Alcaraz, who arrived on loan from Brazilian giants Flamengo, was Everton’s only signing in the January window.
