Finance Guru drops great insight on Tottenham-Real agreement over Reguilon buy-back

Real Madrid are reportedly considering exercising a £40million buyback clause for Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon — and a finance expert says it could be a great deal for both clubs.

New Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire delivered his verdict after Spanish newspaper Sport revealed Los Blancos are planning to re-sign the 24-year-old less than six months after his departure.

Tottenham paid a reported £25m for Reguilon’s services in September and the Spaniard has impressed in North London since, particularly with his crossing ability.

But the reported buyback clause would enable them to make a big profit on the defender.

Fans will likely be agitated by news of his potential exit but Maguire explains that buyback clauses are a key factor in many modern transfers.

He said that, from a financial perspective, Spurs chiefs won’t feel too aggrieved should Real re-sign Reguilon.

He told Football Insider: “If you are selling a younger player who you don’t really want to sell, this is a way of accelerating the deal.

“The buying club tends to be reluctant because Reguilon’s market value is probably going to be more than £41m but at least Spurs would get a decent fee out of it should Real Madrid choose to utilise it.

“I think to a certain extent everyone’s happy should the player leave. It’s very much part of modern-day negotiations.”

Reguilon made just 12 first-team appearances for Real, with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy ahead of him in the pecking order during his time at the Bernabeu.

The 24-year-old missed last night’s clash with Liverpool and is expected to be out for three weeks as he recovers from a muscle injury.

In other news, a top pundit and former Tottenham favourite has tipped three players to leave the club before the January transfer window closes.
