Exclusive: Ex-Spur reveals Vertonghen suspicion after big contract update
Michael Brown suspects Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen will not be willing to give his all for the cause if he signs a contract extension until the end of the season.
The former Spurs midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that Jose Mourinho “needs help” to alleviate the uncertainty when it comes to his defenders.
As revealed by Football Insider, Tottenham have offered the 33-year-old a contract extension until the end of the season and expect him to sign it.
It is understood the Belgium international, whose current deal runs out at the end of the month, has been offered the chance to join both Inter Milan and Fiorentina when he becomes a free agent.
Brown has questioned whether Vertonghen will be willing to give everything for Spurs if he signs a new deal and plays for the club until the end of the season.
Brown told Football Insider: “We’re all talking about the uncertainty of Spurs and their back line, whether he need players – we know he does.

“I just think he needs a bit of help in those areas with player contracts running out, which now makes it even more difficult for Mourinho and Spurs to actually be sure.
“The players who have that uncertainty, when you’re out of contract, how much can you give to the cause? How much can you really be yourself?”
Vertonghen has played 26 times for Spurs across all competitions this season.
However, he has not been guaranteed a role in the starting XI under Mourinho and has started on the bench for four of the club’s last eight league games.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have tabled an offer for a young centre-forward.
