Fleetwood Town have set their sights on signing Blackburn Rovers outcast Charlie Mulgrew, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The 34-year-old in into the last 12 months of his contract at Ewood Park and the Championship club will look to cash in now rather than lose him on a free next summer.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Fleetwood are plotting a move to sign the experienced centre-half to bolster their defence.
The 44-time Scotland international is not part of Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray’s plans going forward so the club will listen to offers from potential suitors.
When speaking on the centre-back’s future last month, Mowbray said: “He’s 34 now and sometimes as a manager you have to make decisions.
“If it was just about the guy then Charlie could stay here for as long as he wanted for what he’s achieved for this football club. Sentiment can’t come into it because we have to keep marching forward.”
Mulgrew spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Wigan Athletic where he made 13 appearances before returning to the Lancashire in January.
Since February the Glasgow-born defender has only made one appearance for the Blue and Whites, which came in a 2-0 defeat at Barnsley at the end of June.
He arrived at Ewood Park from Celtic on a free in 2016 and has gone on to make the has made 109 appearances for the club and score 27 times.
Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton has already added Jordan Rossiter, Callum Camps, Joel Coleman, Mark Duffy and Morgan Boyes to his ranks in this transfer window.
The Fishermen are looking to go one step further in the 2020/21 campaign after they missed out on promotion through the play-offs last season.
