Exclusive: Gary O’Neil offered manager’s job after Liam Rosenior agrees terms
Gary O’Neil has been offered the Strasbourg manager’s job after Liam Rosenior joined Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.
The Stamford Bridge club announced on Tuesday morning that Rosenior has agreed a six-year contract to be their new manager.
Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg are now working on agreeing a deal for O’Neil, the former Wolves manager, to replace him.
He has been touted for multiple Championship jobs this season, but has failed to agree terms with any of them.
His return to management could now come in France with the club run by Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership.

Gary O’Neil’s managerial record in the Premier League
O’Neil has been a Premier League manager since 2022, and he has enjoyed relative levels of success across jobs with both Bournemouth and Wolves.
The 42-year-old first took charge of the Cherries as interim boss following the sacking of Scott Parker in August 2022, but was quickly handed the job on a permanent basis three months later after a promising start.
O’Neil led the South Coast outfit to a 15th-place finish that year in their first campaign back in the Premier League, but was surprisingly shown the door in the summer of 2023 to make way for Andoni Iraola.
| Club | Games | W | D | L | Win % |
| Wolves | 63 | 20 | 11 | 32 | 31.75% |
| Bournemouth (permanent only) | 25 | 7 | 2 | 16 | 28% |
He then guided a low-budget Wolves side to safety with a 14th-place finish in 2023-24, before eventually being sacked in December 2024.
He boasted a win percentage of just shy of 30 per cent across his time at Bournemouth, while he then pushed slightly above that figure at Molineux.

O’Neil is set to work in a foreign league for the first time if he chooses to accept Strasbourg’s offer, and that will undoubtedly provide a fresh challenge after his exploits in England.
Liam Rosenior has already received clear warning from O’Neil
O’Neil spoke about Rosenior’s appointment at Chelsea during his recent appearance on Match of the Day, and he issued a clear warning to his counterpart.
The former midfielder acknowledged that the job at Stamford Bridge was a “fantastic opportunity” for Rosenior, but he was also keen to stress how difficult managing in the Premier League can be.
O’Neil insisted that the new Chelsea man would soon find out about the rigours of managing in the English top-flight, but the early stages are set to be a case of him learning on the job.
Strasbourg fans have been left frustrated with BlueCo due to the manner of Rosenior’s departure, but they could now be just days away from getting a new man of their own at the helm.
