Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be “absolutely buzzing” with his striker options, according to Darren Bent.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England forward claimed that the form of Kemar Roofe and Jermain Defoe means Gerrard will not have an issue if Alfredo Morelos “lets the team down” again.
Roofe made his return from a calf injury last week and scored a stunning 54-yard strike against Standard Liege in the Europa League.
Fellow striker Defoe got his first league goal of the season, and the 300th goal of his career, in the Light Blues’ 2-0 win over Livingston on Sunday.
However, Bent had particular praise for Roofe and he called on Gerrard to give the 27-year-old more opportunities now he’s fit.
He told Football Insider: “They’ve got Morelos that’s still there, they’ve got Defoe.
“But Kemar Roofe he looks hungry. I like Kemar Roofe I have always done since he was at Leeds.
“It’s what you want and Steven Gerrard is buzzing that he’s got all these players now that are fighting for the starting place.
“If Morelos throws his toys out of the pram, or lets the team down, which he has done in the past then it doesn’t really make a difference because you’ve got guys there who are chomping at the bit for their chance.
“Kemar Roofe scored a great goal and it would be nice to see him kick on and get more opportunities.
“It was a great goal, definitely one that was superb.”
Morelos has scored just three league goals this season in nine games.
The 24-year-old ended last season with a goalless run of nine games, meaning he has scored just three times in his last 18 Scottish Premiership appearances.
