Exclusive: ‘Graham Potter sack guaranteed with West Ham repeat’

Graham Potter won’t be in charge at West Ham at the end of next season without a major improvement, according to Glen Johnson.

The former Hammers youngster told Football Insider exclusively that next season will be make or break for the manager, but he could be afforded some leeway as the team has “been a bit of a mess”.

Potter’s struggles have largely gone under the radar since he took over in January, in large part due to Ange Postecoglou’s struggles with Tottenham and Ruben Amorim’s difficulties at Man United, and indeed that of predecessor Julen Lopetegui.

The ex-Chelsea boss has managed just three wins in 16 games in all competitions since replacing the Spaniard, with the Irons sliding down to 17th in the Premier League table during his time in charge.

West Ham set for summer overhaul in bid to back Graham Potter

Having shelled out over £120million [transfermarkt] last summer, only Aaron Wan-Bissaka has looked to be value for money from the squad overhaul.

In response, West Ham are looking to once again conduct sweeping changes, with 15 first-teamers on the chopping block in East London.

Whilst points have been hard to come by, and the performances have been underwhelming, Potter retains the backing of the Hammers’ hierarchy, as evidenced by Kyle Macaulay’s hiring to work in tandem with chairman David Sullivan on recruitment.

Glen Johnson issues warning ahead of Graham Potter’s first full season in charge

Potter is seemingly in no danger of losing his job for now, but former West Ham right-back Johnson warned that the manager would “100%” be gone if results do not improve, which he has backed him to do.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, via Coin Poker, the former England international said: “If this was his full season, then yes [he would be under pressure of losing his job], but when he took over, there’s kind of been a bit of a mess.

“So, listen, if this happens again next year, then 100% he won’t be there this time next year.

“I think once he’s got a full pre-season behind him, a good summer, a good market, I think he’ll be able to turn it around and they’ll be nowhere near the relegation next year.”
