Exclusive: Houston Dynamo in advanced talks to sign Watford star

Watford goalkeeper Jonathan Bond is advanced talks to join MLS side Houston Dynamo, sources have told Football Insider.

Bond, 31, is out of contract this summer and Houston Dynamo are keen to offer the keeper a move back to the USA after his return to Watford in the summer.

Negotiations are advancing on a deal with the US team confident of agreeing the terms of a contract.

The former England Under-21 international had three years at LA Galaxy prior to his move to Watford last summer. Watford is the club he started his career with, making 33 appearances before spells at Peterborough, West Brom and Gillingham.

Jonathan Bond set for MLS return amid Houston Dynamo interest

Bond re-joined Watford in 2024 on a one-year deal, but with his contract expiring in the coming months, and a move back to the States appears likely.

The 31-year-old has made just eight Championship starts this season under head coach Tom Cleverley, featuring 12 times in total across all competitions.

His most notable spell came in October with a four-game league run, followed by five more appearances at the start of the year—though he managed just one clean sheet in that time.

Despite being the preferred choice in cup competitions earlier in the season, Bond was unable to help Watford progress after defeats to Fulham and Manchester City.

When the coach dropped Bond for the clash against Sunderland on 8 February, Cleverley was left furious at his Watford players after a disappointing 2-2 draw, highlighting some of the defensive frailties in the team.

Bond previously enjoyed a solid spell at LA Galaxy between 2021 and 2024, where he made 92 appearances and recorded 16 clean sheets. A return to the MLS could offer the former West Brom and Reading shot-stopper more regular playing time in familiar surroundings.

Giorgi Chakvetadze linked with Everton move as Watford prepare for summer changes

Bond may not be the only player to depart Vicarage Road this summer, with speculation also growing around Giorgi Chakvetadze.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson suggested Chakvetadze could be a strong fit for Everton, and is someone who would fit into the squad.

The 25-year-old has been a bright spark for Watford this season, offering versatility in attacking midfield, out wide and up front, contributing nine goal involvements so far.

As Watford sit ninth in the Championship with just one win in their last five games, changes are expected at the club this summer, but Cleverley will hope his players can regain focus as they face Bristol City on 5 April who sit four points above them in the table.
