Alan Hutton claims that Ezri Konsa could be in line for an England call-up after his impressive form for Aston Villa this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and Scotland star suggests that manager Dean Smith has given the defender and Ross Barkley a platform to demonstrate their talents this season.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Smith revealed he had told Barkley that he would help get him back into the England squad for next summer’s European Championships when trying to sign him on loan from Chelsea.
Barkley, who has 33 caps under his belt to date, has not been in the Three Lions’ squad for over a year.
Hutton believes that the attacking midfielder is showing the right form to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans and suggests that Konsa could join him on the international stage.
“He’s definitely on the right track, that’s for sure,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“I know the manager well, he’s definitely given him the confidence to go forward and do that.
“It’s a platform – you just have to look at the other players: Mings, Jack (Grealish), even Konsa. By the time it comes about, if they keep going the way they’re going, there’s no reason these players can’t be in the hat to go to the Euros, they’ve been absolutely excellent.
“They’re just flying high at the moment.”
Konsa has played for both England’s under-20s and under-21s to date, although he was not a regular fixture for either squad.
His last under-21s outing came as a substitute in a dead-rubber tie against Croatia last summer.
In other Aston Villa news, a 19-year-old starlet has been told he has a big part to play after a move to the Championship was blocked.
