Alan Hutton says that Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti is the exact sort of signing that Tottenham should be looking to pull off this month.

The former Spurs and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the Lilywhites need to bolster their back line after leaking goals under Jose Mourinho.

It has been reported that Tottenham had been offered the opportunity to sign Umtiti this month, with Mourinho said to be confident of signing a new central defender.

Having seen his old side concede on a regular basis since Mourinho’s arrival, Hutton says that signing Umtiti could sort out their issues quickly.

Asked if Umtiti was the sort of signing Spurs should be looking for, Hutton told Football Insider: “Oh definitely, definitely. He could be massive for Tottenham.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, this is where they need to strengthen, at the back, since Mourinho’s come in they’ve let in around 20 goals in 12, 13 games so it’s something that needs sorting as soon as possible.

“He definitely is the quality of player that a team like Tottenham need. Played at a very high level, not been playing as much at Barcelona so it’s definitely someone I think they would look to bring in, he would really add strength to that back line.”

Umtiti has featured just eight times for the Catalan giants this season, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique the first-choice options at the Nou Camp at present.

He has a total of 106 appearances under his belt in Barcelona, while he turned out 160 times for Olympique Lyonnais during his time in France.

In other Tottenham news, Hutton says that a Spurs starlet could regret not moving to Scotland this month for the rest of his career.
