Exclusive: Hutton drops McGinn update after chat ahead of Aston Villa v Man City
Alan Hutton has revealed how upset Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is that he is likely to miss the League Cup final through injury.
The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says his fellow countryman could not hide his disappointment after the semi-final win over Leicester City.
The 25-year-old has been out of action with a fractured ankle suffered back in December, although he has returned to training on grass in the last week.
Having kept in touch with the midfielder since leaving Villa last summer, the recently-retired Hutton revealed just how much the former Hibernian man is hurting.
“I can tell every time I meet him and I speak to him he’s bursting to get back on the pitch, he just wants to help,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“He was obviously down about it, it was the semi-final at Villa Park, we were talking after the game and he was so low, obviously so high that they won but so low that he probably wasn’t going to play.

“I remember saying to him look, he’s such a quality player that he’ll be at Wembley so many more times, don’t worry about it. He couldn’t even try and hide the fact he was disappointed. I know how much he wants to be there.”
McGinn had played 20 times across all competitions before being sidelined, including in two of their six League Cup games so far.
Dean Smith has the likes of Danny Drinkwater, Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba and Conor Hourihane to call upon in the middle of the pitch instead.
