Alan Hutton has revealed his shock that Barry Douglas ended up at Leeds United and is convinced he is one of the best full-backs in the Championship.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Russell Edge, the former Aston Villa right-back explained why he is a big admirer of his fellow Scotland international and is scratching his head at Douglas’ fall from grace.
The 30-year-old was a star man for Wolves in their promotion-winning campaign before he was surprisingly offloaded to Leeds last year for around £3million.
“I think at Wolves he really showed what he could do,” Hutton told Football Insider. “Great crosser of the ball – it was a strange one when he left Wolves, I didn’t really get it.
“He did so well and I don’t know whether he had been pushed out or something had happened.”
Douglas had an outstanding 2017-18 campaign in which he provided 15 assists from 42 matches at left-back as well as weighing in with five goals.
He has not been able to quite match those feats at Elland Road, and has spent much of this calendar year playing second fiddle to Ezgjan Alioski.
“At Leeds he has had a bit of an up-and-down time, he’s been out injured and stuff which is difficult but I think if he can get a run of games this time around he can really push on,” Hutton added.
“He’ll definitely be up there among the best full-backs in the league. His crossing ability, his engine, he really does well.”
“It’s a shame for him with the Scotland situation because he’s got two players ahead of him that are just unbelievable so it’s a difficult one, that’s actually a shame.”
