Hutton Exclusive: Villa players raving to me about 2019 signing who can't nail down spot

Alan Hutton has claimed the Aston Villa players are raving about summer signing Trezeguet but Dean Smith is unconvinced.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Villans right-back admitted that Trezeguet had only shown flashes of his ability and didn’t do enough in the 5-0 win over Liverpool.

The 25-year-old Egypt international played 90 minutes against the Reds and did register an assist in the match, but Hutton explained more was expected of him as he was playing a young Liverpool side.

Hutton noted that Smith had chopped and changed his team due to not being settled on Trezeguet being the right option, and proceeded to urge the winger to be more consistent.

When asked if Trezeguet would have been frustrated with his latest display as he struggled to shine, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah, there was a lot of excitement about him at the start of the season especially coming from within the squad.

“Obviously talking to some of the boys, they were saying his pace and technical ability was outstanding and I think we’ve only seen it in flashes.

“I must admit I did expect more from him against Liverpool especially playing against such young full-backs, I did expect to see him do more if you like.

“Like I’ve said I’ve seen his ability in flashes but just not enough this season and I think that’s why Dean Smith has chopped and changed.

“He put Jack Grealish forward once, he has went with Anwar El Ghazi more often than not, Jota at times.

“These players have been in and out so obviously he is not settled with Trezeguet at the moment, I think he needs to give a little more and be more consistent to be a regular in the team.”

The Villans signed Trezeguet in the summer from Turkish side Kasimpasa in a deal worth £8.75million.

The 25-year-old has featured 18 times for Villa this season, racking up three goals and two assists in the process.
