Rangers news: McNamara implores Docherty to join Sunderland

Exclusive: Jackie McNamara implores Rangers player to join 'Special' club after offer made

Jackie McNamara encouraged Rangers attacker Greg Docherty to join Sunderland as they’re a special club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex Scotland international argued that Sunderland were still a big club and Docherty could learn a lot by joining them.

Football Insider recently revealed that League One outfit have tabled a loan offer for the 23-year-old winger.

McNamara stated that if Docherty was to have any future at Ibrox then learning how to play under pressure could help him and that he’d certainly feel the pressure at Sunderland.

When asked if Docherty should join Sunderland as it’s the ideal club for him, McNamara told Football Insider: “Yeah, Sunderland are a big club, yes they’ve had a few managers and a couple of relegations over the last few years and don’t have the same pull financially, but still a good fan base and a good stadium.

“They’re a passionate lot down there, so yeah that be a good move for him as it’s still a big club.

“Obviously they need to get out of the division, and they’ll be under pressure on every game and it’ll be good for him to learn to handle that if he is to have a future at Rangers.

“Sunderland aren’t a League One club, they’re special, yes they’re in that division, but they’re not a League One club in any shape or form.

“I can understand he may want to play higher in the Championship as it’s different than League One and League Two.

“Obviously a lot of players from Rangers and Celtic have gone down there (England) and made good names for themselves, like how Charlie Adam went down to Blackpool and Liverpool, after not getting the opportunity they would have liked.

“So it could be a good platform for him.”

The Gers winger has struggled to feature for Steven Gerrard’s side this season as he has racked up just six appearances across all competitions.

Docherty previously had a successful loan spell with Shrewsbury Town as he scored 10 goals as well as registered 11 assists in the 50 appearances he made for them.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have tabled a centre-forward offer.
