Exclusive: John Egan arrives at Burnley after leaving Sheffield United

John Egan is training with Burnley after leaving Sheffield United, sources have told Football Insider.

The 31-year-old defender is a free agent after the Championship club decided against renewing his contract following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The Republic of Ireland international has now linked up with Burnley as they weigh up a move for the experienced centre-back.

Burnley are seeking to shore up their defence as new manager Scott Parker seeks to earn promotion back to the English top flight.

Before last season, Egan had been a mainstay for Sheffield United in both the Championship and the Premier League, making 224 appearances 222 of which were starts.

The defender struggled for first-team football last campaign, playing just 484 minutes in the league as the Yorkshire club finished dead last.

Parker’s side currently have 35 first-team players available for the gruelling Championship season, eight of which are central defenders, and are set to add more following the loan signing of Bashir Humphreys from Chelsea.

Football Insider revealed (August 21) that Joe Worrall is undergoing a Burnley medical after Nottingham Forest accepted a bid.
