Exclusive: Karl Robinson in contention to be next Cardiff City manager

Salford City boss Karl Robinson is in the frame for the vacant manager’s job at Cardiff City, sources have told Football Insider.

The 44-year-old, who is close to reaching 800 games as an EFL manager, is a top contender for the role and has been shortlisted by decision-makers at recently relegated Cardiff.

The Bluebirds have been searching for a new manager since former boss Omer Riza was sacked last month – with Aaron Ramsey named caretaker for the last three games of the campaign.

Ramsey, who is still registered as a Cardiff player, is unsure of what his future holds with the club keen to bring in a new manager to lead their push for promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Robinson is top contender to land Cardiff job

Robinson is highly-regarded in coaching circles after impressive spells with MK Dons, Charlton, Oxford and now Salford.

The former Leeds and Blackburn coach has done an impressive job at Salford since joining the club in January 2024.

Robinson’s Salford stats (2024 – present)

Robinson guided Salford to safety last season following his appointment – and this term they missed out on the League Two play-offs by just one point, despite operating on one of the lowest budgets in the league.

The 44-year-old boss also has plenty of experience in League One after his time at Oxford United, during which he guided his side to the play-offs in consecutive seasons before his dismissal in 2023.

Cardiff will play third-tier football for first time since 2003

Robinson has managed 525 games in the third tier, winning 222, and would bring a wealth of experience to Cardiff as they prepare for life after relegation.

The Bluebirds will play third-tier football next season for the first time since securing promotion in the 2002-2003 campaign.

Cardiff finished bottom of the Championship in the 2024-25 season, winning just nine of 46 league games.
