Kevin Phillips has demanded striker Leigh Griffiths sort out his attitude amid question marks over his long-term future at Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international claimed that the 29-year-old’s ability was in no doubt, but that his fitness and motivation has been open to question for a long time.
The forward missed a several months for the Hoops due to personal reasons, but has hit two goals in two matches since coming back from the winter break.
The Bhoys have also dipped into the transfer market this month to bring in 21-year-old Polish starlet Patryk Klimala, and Phillips is of the opinion that it could spur Griffiths on to reach his former heights.
“You’d like to think it will inspire him to get himself fully fit,” he told Football Insider.
“Get himself back to where we was a few years back banging and goes left, right and centre, being a nuisance to play against and he’s got talent.
“He can hit a set play as well, as we saw against England for Scotland. He’s got ability but sometimes ability isn’t enough.
“Your attitude needs to be right, your work rate, your fitness needs to be right, so maybe someone bringing in is going to challenge him maybe it’s the best thing that brings the best out of them.”
As revealed by Football Insider, Griffiths has been linked with an exit from Parkhead this month, with English Championship side Leeds United interested in acquiring his services, but the Hoops put a price tag of £12 million on his head.
Since then, the Whites have completed a deal to bring young French striker Jean-Kevin Augustin from RB Leipzig, essentially ruling them out of a swoop for the Scottish international.
