Exclusive: ‘Leicester City face points deductions for next three seasons’

Leicester City have played their final Premier League game of the 2024-25 campaign and will be preparing for life back in the Championship after finishing 18th.

Football Insider revealed on 21 May that Leicester are likely to be deducted at least six points next term for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2023-24 campaign.

The Foxes’ spending limit for the three-year cycle up to 2024 was £83million – as the cap drops from £35million a season in the Premier League to £13million when in the Championship.

Any future seasons in the second-tier will hurt Leicester’s chances of complying with the rules and avoiding further penalties.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed the Midlands club could “have a headache for the next two or three seasons” if they can’t achieve promotion.

Leicester handed new points deduction warning

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Leicester will be stuck in the Championship for “quite a while” if they can’t secure an immediate return to the riches of the Premier League.

The 2025-26 campaign will mark 10 years since Claudio Ranieri’s side embarked on a famous title win at the King Power Stadium.

This term, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side finished 13 points from safety and won just six of 38 league games.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Leicester need to get going and they’re going to need to win the league by a big margin next year.

“Because with no promotion, they’ll be stagnating. Parachute payments will get smaller, and they’ll have a real challenge to get out of the division.

“They’ll have a headache with PSR and points deductions, I think, for the next two or three seasons.

“From winning the Premier League, it feels like almost yesterday – they could be stuck in the Championship for quite a while.

“That’s the result of pushing PSR too hard, and we’re seeing a lot of clubs struggle. Whether it’s fair or not, is a different thing.

“But they are the rules, and this is the situation for Leicester.”

Leicester in advanced talks to appoint new boss

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (20 May) that Leicester are in advanced talks to appoint Russell Martin as their new manager.

The Foxes have decided to sack Van Nistelrooy as they assess the market for alternatives.

An announcement will be made once Leicester are confident they have wrapped up a deal for Martin, 39, to come in as his immediate replacement.
