Exclusive: Leicester line up two priority January deals

Leicester City will target a new striker and centre-back as their priorities in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Foxes recently replaced Steve Cooper with Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dugout but the Dutchman’s new manager bounce has come to an end.

Leicester now have a cushion of just two points to the bottom three after the 3-0 home loss against Wolves on Sunday (22 December).

A week earlier, Van Nistelrooy’s side were 4-0 losers away at Newcastle United.

The Midlands club are keen to strengthen in the new year with the start of the January window now just days away.

Jamie Vardy is the club’s top scorer in the Premier League this term with six goals in 16 appearances.

Van Nistelrooy and his transfer team are keen to bring in more help for the legendary forward next month and bolster their quest for survival.

A centre-back is also needed to stem the flow of goals conceded – with the Foxes shipping the second-most (37) behind 18th-place Wolves (40).

Jannik Vestergaard has started alongside Conor Coady in the last two games but club chiefs have recognised the need for an upgrade.

Van Nistelrooy started his reign with a 3-1 win over West Ham and a 2-2 draw against Brighton but has since suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats.

The Foxes, who sit 17th in the table, are in action against Liverpool, Man City and Aston Villa in their next three top-flight games.
