Noel Whelan has tipped Neil Lennon to start Scott Bain against Hamilton regardless of whether Celtic sign a new goalkeeper.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes that the 28-year-old deserves his chance after starting every one of the club’s pre-season games.
As quoted by the Daily Record, Lennon confirmed that the Hoops are working on a number of goalkeeping options ahead of the new Premiership season.
The Hoops kick off their campaign with a home tie against Hamilton next Sunday.
Despite Lennon admitting he wants a new shot-stopper between the sticks this summer, Whelan believes Bain, who barely featured at all last season, will be starting at Parkhead.
Whelan told Football Insider: “I think we’ve got to watch this space, I’m sure they’re going to need that strength in that area – they didn’t have enough last summer which is why they went and got Fraser Forster.
“I’m sure there’s a deal being done right now as we talk because they’re going to need that experience and that help in that department.
“He probably will start the season, if he’s started all the pre-season games, I would think he would be given that opportunity but let’s be honest, Celtic will be in the hunt for a goalkeeper.”
Bain played just eight times for Celtic last season, with five of those appearances coming in the Champions League qualifiers before Fraser Forster was signed.
He is now the most senior goalkeeper at Parkhead after Craig Gordon left on a free transfer.
In other Celtic news, Whelan has suggested the Bhoys signing an £8.5million striker on a loan-to-buy deal.
