Exclusive: Liverpool can do ‘whatever they want’ as Quansah boosts spending power

Liverpool may not benefit from a PSR perspective with UEFA from Jarell Quansah’s sale but that will have had no impact on their decision to sell the defender.

That is the view of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the Reds have “absolutely no issues with PSR” and have huge spending capabilities.

Sources told Football Insider on 20 June that Quansah had agreed to personal terms with Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite being a highly regarded player and a crucial part of the England Under-21 team that won the U21 European Championship this summer, the 22-year-old struggled for first-team minutes last season.

Quansah made just four starts in the Premier League last season and at such a crucial stage of his development, playing time is a necessity.

However, according to finance expert Stefan Borson, Liverpool would have the profits from Quansah’s sale wiped by UEFA, due to the governing body’s rules on player exchange after Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz swapped the BayArena for Anfield this summer.

Profits not a concern for Liverpool with Jarell Quansah sale

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, finance expert Plumley explained that whilst UEFA would likely wipe out the profits, that would not be a major concern for Liverpool.

The senior lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University said the Reds could do “whatever they wanted” in the transfer window, as their financial position was so strong.

Plumley said the Premier League champions are “well in line” to pass UEFA’s squad cost rules, and as such, could focus on getting a deal that worked well for both player and club.

Liverpool have agreed a buy-back clause as part of Quansah’s move to Leverkusen, allowing them to bring the youngster back to the club if he performs well enough in Germany, highlighting the priority to work out a good sporting deal, as opposed to a PSR-motivated transfer.

Plumley said: “The other thing I would add with Liverpool is the sub-context here; they’ve got absolutely no issues with PSR anyway.

“It’s almost like we fixate on the PSR point, and that’s spot on in terms of Borson’s point there and what UEFA will do when they look at this.

“But Liverpool could have spent, in relative terms, whatever they wanted in this window and it wouldn’t even have been close to Premier League PSR and they’re well in line with UEFA for squad cost.

“So I guess guess in many respects, what I’m trying to say here is he didn’t really matter to Liverpool, it wasn’t a PSR exercise in its own right, it was more about movement of players and the transfer deal itself.”

Joe Gomez may join Jarell Quansah as outgoing Liverpool ace

Quansah may not be the only defender leaving Liverpool this summer, as Mick Brown told Football Insider Joe Gomez may be open to a move to West Ham.

The centre-back is the Reds’ longest-serving first-team player, but featured just 17 times in all competitions last season.

With the World Cup in North America just a year away, this summer could be an exceptionally busy one as players look to secure moves to clubs that can guarantee more first-team minutes.
