Exclusive: Liverpool lay groundwork to sign defender in January
Liverpool want a new centre-back signing in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Sources say money will be available for the Reds in the mid-season window after their quiet summer – which saw only Federico Chiesa arrive at Anfield.
It is believed Liverpool chiefs see January as an opportune time to strengthen as they bid to keep their Premier League title challenge on track.
Arne Slot’s side are top of the table after 10 games and have already pulled gaps of two and seven points to Man City and Arsenal respectively.
Sources say Liverpool’s transfer team are doing their due diligence on a potential centre-back signing in the new year.
It is believed they are reviewing options despite acknowledging that the winter window is tough.
The situation is unrelated to the future of captain Virgil van Dijk, who is out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Liverpool want to renew Van Dijk’s deal and sign new centre-back in January
Liverpool are hopeful the well-loved Dutchman will pen a new deal and hope to strengthen their rearguard even further with new business in January.
Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are also on the books at Anfield and have all played for Arne Slot’s side this term.

The Reds are still battling on three fronts ahead of their League Cup quarter-final against Southampton next month and will enter the FA Cup in January.
Slot’s side are next in action against Leverkusen on Tuesday (5 November) before facing Aston Villa on Saturday (9 November).
In other news, significant Konate update today.
