Exclusive: Malick Fofana responds after ‘hearing about Liverpool interest’
Liverpool’s interest in Malick Fofana is only encouraging the winger to find his best form at Lyon, Football Insider has been told.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider after signing with Roc Nation this week, Fofana discussed his breakthrough campaign for the Ligue 1 side this term, culminating in his international debut for Belgium.
Fofana has made 35 appearances for Lyon this term, scoring a career-best 10 goals in all competitions, two of which came in October’s 4-1 demolition of Rangers in their Europa League clash at Ibrox.
The 20-year-old is Lyon’s top scorer on the continent this season with six strikes in just nine matches, and though he’s missed several games in 2025 with hip and knee injuries, Fofana’s stock is rising high.

Malick Fofana makes Lyon transfer admission
Liverpool look set to be on the hunt for wide players this summer with question marks over the futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, and Fofana is one of several names liked with a switch to Anfield.
However, speaking to Football Insider amid his signing with Roc Nation‘s agency on 8 April, Fofana admitted that while he’s flattered by such interest, his full focus is on returning at his best for Lyon.
“Honestly, I hear about it (Liverpool and Arsenal) but it doesn’t affect me, so I just focus on myself, and I know when I do great that the rest will come”, Fofana said.
Player | Appearances | Starts | Goals | Assists | Games Missed |
Malick Fofana | 35 | 19 | 10 | 5 | 5 |
“I watch a lot of the Premier League, I know there is a lot of big clubs, so for the moment, I just want to make that return on the pitch.
“In my head I said to myself – ‘this season I have to show myself to the world’. I know I am capable of that.
“I know my talents, I know what I can do, so it was just a matter of time. I know people will always talk – I stay calm, I have a great mentality so I know it will come.”

Liverpool line up Malick Fofana amid Luis Diaz exit news
Liverpool’s interest in Fofana comes amid speculation over their wide attackers, with Football Insider revealing on 4 April that Arne Slot is confident they can reach a breakthrough in contract talks with Salah.
However, Liverpool seem less keen on tying Diaz down in the long-term, with former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown telling Football Insider that they’d be happy to sell him this summer.
Diaz attracting attention from Barcelona could potentially open up a spot on the left flank at Anfield next term, and this could see the Reds accelerate their interest in signing Lyon’s Fofana for big money.
Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens will still be an expensive acquisition despite the Bundesliga side lowering their transfer valuation, and Liverpool may instead turn their attention towards Fofana.
