Exclusive: Man United and Everton face ‘problem’ over new technology addition

Ruben Amorim and David Moyes will have fresh concerns as Man United and Everton prepare for pre-season, according to Keith Hackett.

Both clubs are set to take part in the Premier League Summer Series tournament over in America, following on from Chelsea‘s victorious visit to the country for the Club World Cup.

The Red Devils kicked off their pre-season with a goalless draw against Leeds United, while the Toffees have faced off against Accrington Stanley and Blackburn Rovers, still waiting for victory.

With the clubs heading out to America in a number of days, the players will be presented with new refereeing technology, which is now being trialled ahead of potentially being used in the Premier League.

Premier League in talks over ref cam technology

After a major success at the Club World Cup, the Premier League are in talks with the IFAB to introduce ref cams for the 2025/26 campaign, with the technology being tested on Man United, Everton, West Ham, and Bournemouth [The Guardian].

It is unknown whether the cameras would be picking up just visual, or if sound will also be recorded, which could be used retrospectively to punish disgruntled players.

Man United captain Bruno Fernandes has already been warned about his talking back to match officials, but all players will have to adapt quickly if the Premier League decide to add the technology next season.

Man United and Everton to be careful around referees

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the technology, Hackett said: “The first thing I see with the body cameras is a great deal of information being acquired by the referees’ coaching teams because they’ll be able to inspect the viewing angles.

“If it records sound, which I’m unsure if that will be included, that potentially is a problem for the clubs, not the referees. I’d want to know prior to the technology being used: Is sound being recorded?

“And will that be used in a disciplinary action? This can act as a deterrent against dissent.”

Everton open their Premier League campaign with a visit to Leeds United at Elland Road, while the Red Devils will be facing Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, 17 August.
