Exclusive: Man United backtrack on Busby families after Sir Alex intervenes

INEOS were forced to backtrack on a decision to revoke privileges given to the families of the Busby Babes at Man United after Sir Alex Ferguson intervened, sources have told Football Insider.

The families of players involved in Sir Matt Busby’s legendary side are regulars in the directors’ box at Old Trafford, but the club’s part-owners had threatened to put an end to those positions.

The latest controversy comes following the decision to end the club’s multi-million pound annual commitment to Sir Alex, who had been a club ambassador since stepping down as the first-team manager in 2013.

However, sources say it was an intervention from the revered former-United boss which saw Ratcliffe and INEOS make a U-turn on their call.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s owners have undergone a major cost-cutting programme since purchasing their 27.7% stake in United in an attempt to strengthen the financial situation.

This included the controversial move to dismiss over 250 employees behind the scenes, from the scouting department to matchday staff – taking many by surprise.

Man United were contacted by Football Insider on Tuesday but did not respond to the latest controversial claim.

INEOS forced backtrack over latest controversial Man United call

Ahead of the Premier League fixture against Everton on 1 December, United fans protested against INEOS and Ratcliffe’s ticket price hikes without any consultation.

In a statement reacting to the protests, as per BBC Sport, Man United defended their recent actions, stating: “As a club, we have been focused on cost saving to put us on a stronger financial footing.

“This means having to make very hard decisions, including a significant reduction in our staff numbers.

“It also means looking for opportunities to increase our revenues so we can continue to invest in football and infrastructure.”

Former United star Rio Ferdinand has also been outspoken in his criticism of the club’s decisions as he previously shared: “If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE at Man United. Anyone can get it now. INEOS sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?”
