Exclusive: Man United big-money deals finished after £71m Mbeumo spend
Man United’s lavish spending this summer may be curtailed despite Ruben Amorim’s squad needing more work done on it.
That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that although he did not expect any more “huge outlays”, there were still likely to be several incoming players.
The Red Devils are working hard to right the wrongs of a terrible 2024/25 campaign that saw them record their lowest finish in Premier League history.
Taking advantage of the Club World Cup-inspired transfer window, Matheus Cunha was snapped up from Wolves for £62.5million [Sky Sports].
Bryan Mbeumo was the next player to join Man United and although his deal took a lot longer to complete, Amorim’s side eventually agreed a deal for £71million [Sky Sports].
However, despite signing two of the Premier League’s best players from last term, their inability to shift outcasts such as Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho is making further recruitment more difficult this summer.

Man United won’t spend ‘huge amounts’ after Cunha, Mbeumo
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, finance expert Plumley explained why he did not expect United to continue splashing out “huge amounts” on players this summer.
However, the senior lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University does expect the Red Devils to continue adding to Amorim’s squad.
He said: “There’s the wider context of what’s happening with PSR more generally in the Premier League, and we know that that’s going to change in the next year, so there’s that in the background as well.

“And then I think, if you’re looking at what they might do next, we probably won’t see them spend huge amounts more, but with the situation with potentially another couple out the door as well to come, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them add a couple of signings as well.
“But I don’t think they’ll be on the level of the £62.5m and £71m that we’ve seen for those two players.”

Marcus Rashford no-fee move analysed
As Plumley alluded to, exits are the name of the game for United’s transfer business this summer.
And after a fairly drawn-out saga, Rashford has secured a move to Barcelona on an initial loan with an option to buy.
Whilst the Red Devils would have preferred a straight sale, Plumley told Football Insider that United will be happy to have the winger’s wages off their books this summer, and that it was a deal the club would be happy with.
The 20-time champions of England will also be hoping that Rashford’s loan with Barcelona goes well so that the Catalan giants are motivated to trigger the 27-year-old’s buy-out clause next summer.
