Man United are working on a seal to sign Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Woodman, 28, is out of contract at Preston in June and United are ready to offer the former England Under-21 international a surprise move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have targeted Woodman to become their new third-choice keeper, replacing Tom Heaton – who is set to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Woodman, who came through the ranks at Newcastle, will provide a much-needed boost to Man United‘s homegrown quota.

Man United line up Woodman to replace Heaton

Football Insider revealed on Monday (21 April) that United goalkeeper duo Heaton and Altay Bayindir are expected to leave the club this summer.

Meanwhile, they fear replacing under-pressure goalkeeper Andre Onana will put a “severe” dent in their summer transfer budget and are not prioritising a deal for a new number one shot-stopper.

Woodman only left Newcastle for Preston in 2022 after making just nine senior Magpies appearances and going out on loan on multiple occasions.

He has made 44 appearances across all competitions this term, keeping 17 clean sheets and conceding 48 goals.

The shot-stopper is an experienced operator at Championship level, making 215 second-tier appearances in spells with Preston and Swansea.

Man United could cash in on Hojlund

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed (15 April) that Man United could cash in on striker Rasmus Hojlund this summer as they plan to sign an elite forward as a priority.

Hojlund, 22, is attracting interest back in the Italian Serie A – where he made his name with Atalanta.

Amorim‘s transfer chiefs want a new forward this summer as the Portuguese boss looks to put his own stamp on the squad.
