Exclusive: Man United could match Arsenal windfall after off-field deal agreed

Manchester United could earn more than £10million from their Crown-style TV series if it proves to be a success, sources have told Football Insider.

Man United are looking to improve their financial situation after the repercussions of their on-field performances have started to bite at Old Trafford.

The Athletic reported on 21 January Man United have agreed a deal with North American production company Lionsgate to create a dramatised retelling of the club’s history.

The production is only in the developmental phase and is yet to be written or sold to a broadcaster or streaming platform, but the concept is similar to Netflix’s period drama The Crown.

While Man United will receive a guaranteed fee in the low multi-million pounds in the event the series is sold, the value will grow depending on the number of episodes produced and the size of the deal agreed.

How much Man United could really earn from Crown-style series

It was revealed last summer Man United were in secret talks over an Amazon Prime access-all-areas documentary for this season worth significantly more than £10m.

However, the 20-time English champions withdrew from the negotiations after deciding it would be too much of a distraction for the first team.

Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal have all previously opened their doors for one of Amazon’s popular All or Nothing series, banking them around £10m each.

Sources have told Football Insider Man United could earn as much as that figure – and potentially even more – if their TV series proves to be a hit.

It’s so far unclear which periods the drama will cover, with the 1958 Munich Air Disaster and Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Old Trafford deeply ingrained in the club’s history.

How Man United have fallen down Premier League rich list

Man United have been starved of success in recent years, having failed to win the Premier League title since Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

A successful TV series would provide a welcome boost to the Manchester giants’ finances after recently being overtaken in that department by some of their top-flight rivals.

Man United posted a new club-record revenue last season, with their turnover improving from £662m in 2023-24 to £667m.

However, Deloitte’s 2026 Money League has revealed Liverpool generated the highest revenue in the Premier League in 2024-25 at £702m.

Meanwhile, Man City’s turnover stood at £694m and Arsenal’s increased to £690m across the same period.

Man United have the chance to drastically improve their financial situation if they can secure a return to the Champions League this season.

Michael Carrick has claimed victories in each of his opening two matches in charge as interim manager, moving his side up to fourth in the Premier League table.
