Exclusive: Man United have just spent jaw-dropping ‘£37.5m’ sum
Manchester United have likely spent more than £35million in exceptional costs following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and appointment of Ruben Amorim.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider those costs are going to dramatically reduce any buffer they had in terms of profit and sustainability (PSR) for this season.
Ten Hag was sacked on 28 October after a dismal start to the Premier League season.
Amorim was appointed as the Dutchman’s successor on 1 November after Old Trafford chiefs agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon £9.25million in compensation.
The Portuguese, who will make the move to Manchester on 11 November, is the club’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign ended with his retirement in 2013.
Man United exceptional costs to impact PSR situation
After narrowly avoiding a PSR breach last season, Borson revealed the managerial change will have a jaw-dropping impact on Man United’s financial situation for 2024-25.
He told Football Insider: “This is almost something United have had to deal with every three years since Sir Alex Ferguson left.
“It is quite important this time around because we know that they were close to the PSR limit last season.
“I think they probably passed quite narrowly, so we therefore know what the starting point was for this season.
“The bottom line is, if you add likely to be an exceptional cost of about £35million, maybe £37.5million in total, clearly that’s going to cut dramatically any buffer that they have got for PSR this season, especially if the side remains down the table.
“We know that the Premier League payments per position that you get is about £3million.

“At the moment, those two things are playing against them in terms of their forecast for 2024-25 PSR.
“But of course, they have got plenty of time.”
