Exclusive: Man United set for £75m transfer boost

Manchester United’s summer transfer budget could be boosted by around £75million if they win the Europa League this season, sources have told Football Insider.

Ruben Amorim’s side have one foot in the final after beating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg last week, with the reverse fixture taking place on Thursday (8 May) at Old Trafford.

Man United have endured a challenging campaign domestically as they currently sit 15th in the Premier League table.

They are out of contention to qualify for any of the European competitions via their league position, leaving the Europa League as their last remaining hope.

The winner of the competition will earn a place in next season’s Champions League, with Tottenham – who are in the same position as United – currently on course to reach the final after beating Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in the first leg.

United could earn around £100million from the Champions League once prize money and gate receipts are factored in.

However, failing to win the Europa League is likely to have a huge impact on their summer transfer budget.

Sources have told Football Insider United could spend around £75million more if they were to qualify for the Champions League than they would have available without any European football for next season.

Man United set for immediate £10m hit

United will face an immediate £10million hit in sponsorship revenue if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Under the terms of their 10-year deal with Adidas, the club lose £10million for every season they don’t feature in the competition, with the deal worth £90million a year.

That places further pressure on the Manchester giants to win the Europa League to provide their finances with a significant boost.

United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million in 2023-24, but they recorded a net loss of £113.2million as they continue to face profit and sustainability (PSR) issues, with top-flight clubs permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
