Exclusive: Man United set for crushing £27m+ hit

Manchester United are set to be more than £27million down on their anticipated Premier League prize money for this season, sources have told Football Insider.

Man United have endured a miserable first half of the campaign as they currently sit 13th in the table, 14 points behind fourth-place Chelsea after 24 matches.

Their 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday (2 February) means they have now lost five of their last eight Premier League games.

United recorded an eighth-place finish under Erik ten Hag last season, with their FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City papering over the cracks.

They earned around £40.3million in Premier League prize money for 2023-24 as each position is worth approximately £3.1million.

Old Trafford chiefs expected a top-four finish this season and a return to Champions League football, but a poor start to the campaign led to Ten Hag’s sacking in October.

Ruben Amorim has struggled to improve matters on the pitch since his appointment in November, having claimed just four victories in his 13 league games.

Sources have told Football Insider United’s current league position would bank them £24.8million, which is around £27.9million down on their anticipated earnings for the campaign.

Man United facing PSR issues after letter sent to fans

United’s financial situation has been in the spotlight recently after they sent a letter to fan groups last month warning them the club are at risk of breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Their latest accounts for 2023-24 revealed they generated a club-record revenue of £661.8million despite recording a net loss of £113.2million, with top-flight sides only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider United would have breached the PSR rules last season had they not been allowed to add back certain exceptional costs.

The club’s revenue could take a hit this season due to their lack of Champions League football and current position in the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed on 28 November United made a £6.9million loss in the first quarter of the 2024-25 financial year following a £14million dip in their income.

Man United receive government backing for Old Trafford regeneration

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is currently looking to source the necessary funds for the club’s stadium redevelopment project after taking over the footballing operations at Old Trafford in February last year.

A statement from the Treasury on 25 January said Chancellor Rachel Reeves was backing the project as “a shining example” of government plans to promote economic growth.

Plans are in place for the regeneration of the Old Trafford area, with the development of a world-class stadium at the heart of the proposals.

United’s stadium redevelopment could cost the club more than £2billion as they will be financially responsible for that part of the project.
