Exclusive: Mansfield and Doncaster race to sign Tottenham star Matthew Craig

Mansfield and Doncaster Rovers are racing to sign Tottenham midfielder Matthew Craig, sources have told Football Insider.

Spurs are considering recalling Craig early from his loan at Barnsley this month and sending him elsewhere amid interest from a number of EFL clubs.

Craig, 21, joined the Yorkshire club on a season-long loan deal in the summer after enjoying an impressive spell with Doncaster last season.

The Scotland Under-21 international has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley so far this season, but in recent weeks he has found himself left out of the squad.

Spurs could decide to loan him somewhere else to ensure he is getting regular first-team action.

That news has alerted League One Mansfield and League Two promotion hopefuls Doncaster as both clubs look to strengthen their midfield options this month.

Craig has not featured in each of Barnsley’s last four matchday squads, with his last appearance coming off the bench against Leyton Orient in December.

He had played in 14 of the first 15 League One games of this season but has fallen out of favour at Oakwell and is now set to be recalled to Tottenham.

The London-born made 20 appearances and notched one goal and two assists during his spell with Doncaster in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

Craig is under contract with Tottenham until June 2026.

Mansfield sit ninth in League One following their promotion from League Two, while Doncaster sit seventh in the fourth tier and will push for promotion in the second half of this season.
