Exclusive: Martin O’Neill’s Celtic reign could be ended now, 48-yr-old ready to come in

Martin O’Neill’s interim spell in charge of Celtic could be ended after a development over the weekend, sources have told Football Insider.

The 73-year-old took temporary charge of the Glasgow giants following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation last month.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 31 October that O’Neill could get the permanent Celtic job if his spell as interim boss is a success.

However, the Northern Irishman may now be replaced before the end of the international break.

Wilfried Nancy immediately available for Celtic

Columbus Crew manager Wilfried Nancy is now available to join Celtic immediately after his side were dumped out of the MLS play-offs.

Sources say that Nancy is now one of the two frontrunners for the job, along with Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen.

The 48-year-old has been in charge of Columbus Crew since 2023, and before that, he had a successful spell at CF Montreal.

Nancy led Columbus to MLS glory in 2023, as they beat LAFC in the final, and was also named the league’s manager of the year in 2024.

Celtic have alternative option

However, Celtic will extend the reign of O’Neill if they opt to appoint Bodo/Glimt manager Knutsen due to the Norwegian’s contract situation.

The 57-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of Bodo/Glimt’s league season, with their last game on 30 November.

It means that Knutsen could be available from the start of December, but Celtic still have three matches to play before the end of the month.

Therefore, O’Neill could stay on for Scottish Premiership clashes with St Mirren and Hibernian, as well as a Europa League game against Feyenoord, before handing over the reins.
