Bundesliga expert Max Merrill has tipped Chelsea summer signing Timo Werner to “score a lot of goals” in the Premier League if Frank Lampard plays Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham alongside him.
The BundesligaEN and DW Sports correspondent, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed that Werner, 24, is best utilised in a front two rather than a front three, which has often been the case at international level.
Werner arrived at Chelsea earlier this summer in a near £50million deal from RB Leipzig having scored a staggering 34 goals 45 appearances last season.
The Germany international is expected to make his debut for the Blues tonight as they take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Merrill urged Lampard to start Werner alongside a traditional number nine in Giroud or Abraham.
“Chelsea got a decent price for Werner,” he told Football Insider.
“He has set the Bundesliga on fire for two or three seasons now. I really like him as a player but I do think he works best in that Leipzig system. They play a really high press and then play 4-2-2-2. He has had a striker partner in Yussuf Poulsen who is a traditional number nine and I think Werner needs that.
“When he plays for Germany on the left of a 4-3-3 he has not been as effective. I am curious to see if Lampard will play two up top, which suits him the most, or push him out wide. I think that would be a mistake.
“£50million is a decent price for the amount of goals that you will get out of Werner. His finishing has become much more efficient over the past few seasons.
“If he plays with a Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud I think we will see him score a lot of goals.”
