Exclusive: McNamara blown away by rarely-seen Celtic player in 'Very impressive' display
Jackie McNamara has been left raving over Celtic youngster Jeremie Frimpong after his “very impressive” debut against Partick Thistle in midweek.
The former Celtic and Scotland star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says the 18-year-old right-back looked promising at both ends of the pitch on what was his very first appearance for the Bhoys.
Frimpong arrived at Parkhead from Premier League giants Manchester City over the summer, joining Hatem Abd Elhamed and Moritz Bauer in bolstering Neil Lennon’s options on the right-hand side of the defence.
With a twisted ankle leaving Bauer sidelined and Elhamed moving into the centre of defence for the 5-0 win over Partick Thistle, Lennon called on Frimpong to line up on the right and the youngster’s performance caught the eye of McNamara.
The former Hoop told Football Insider: “Frimpong, I thought for his first game, was very good defensively at right-back. It’s a real positive for with the changes and it was still convincing.
“Defensively he looks strong, looks athletic, got himself back into good positions. He obviously got a good education in football, he looks good on the ball as well.

“He looks like a real prospect. For his debut, I thought it was very impressive.”
Frimpong did not feature once for Manchester City’s first-team during his time at the Premier League heavyweights, with under-18 and under-23 football the highest level he had played at before Wednesday’s win.
Israeli international Elhamed has been Lennon’s first-choice on the right-hand side of the defence in the early stages of the season, with former mainstay Mikael Lustig leaving Parkhead on a free transfer over the summer.
