Exclusive: McNamara up in arms over criticism of Rangers figure under ‘Incredible’ pressure
Jackie McNamara was up in arms over the criticism Rangers manager Steven Gerrard received for his celebrations against Celtic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the Hoops legend claimed Gerrard had done nothing wrong as he understandably struggled to control his emotions.
Chris Sutton mocked the Gers manager for his celebrations as he dubbed them embarrassing and bluntly claimed Gerrard was celebrating like he won the league.
McNamara acknowledged that Rangers hadn’t wrapped up the league title just by beating Celtic as there’s a long way to go still but did highlight the incredible pressure Gerrard and Hoops boss Neil Lennon are under this season.
When asked if Sutton was right to criticise Gerrard’s celebrations as they were perhaps slightly over-the-top, McNamara told Football Insider: “No, it’s difficult to control that, you’re human.
“When I was manager of Dundee United, we won at Ibrox in the semi-final against Rangers, and that feeling…you’re human, it’s very difficult to keep that stuff inside.
“I don’t see anything wrong with that, he hasn’t done anything wrong, it’s a big win, which I didn’t see coming, and maybe that’s why he celebrated so much.
“There’s a long way to go, it’s not the title, obviously the pressure Neil and Gerrard are both under is incredible this season.
“And the celebration may have been more a release than enjoyment when you consider that.”
Rangers currently sit two points behind league leaders Celtic after their victory in the Old Firm Derby but have a game in hand.
Gerrard’s side are next in action against St Mirren on January 22nd, while the Hoops are in action against Kilmarnock on the same day.
In other Rangers news, Alan Hutton fears the Gers could lose ‘Excellent’ player amid reported speculation.
