Danny Mills claims that new deals for Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips cannot be far away at Leeds United after Victor Orta’s comments on their futures.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and England defender says that the Leeds director of football’s public comments about the midfielder and forward must point towards contracts being signed.
Orta gave a rare interview to the media during the club’s trip to Australia and was in a bullish mood over the future of the senior pair, stating that he feels “100 per cent confident” that the duo would put pen to paper on new deals.
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider, Phillips has already turned down one offer from Leeds, with the midfielder wanting to be elevated into a wage bracket on par with the highest earners at Elland Road.
Mills warned Orta that he could end up with egg on his face if something was not revealed soon and suggested the deals were in the pipelines at Elland Road.
“You start to look very, very silly and a little bit stupid if they suddenly don’t come off,” Mills told Football Insider.
“He doesn’t come out and speak that often so I would assume that they can’t be that far away. Roofe, one outstanding season, a very similiar situation to Kalvin Phillips.
“Give him an extension, bump his wages with certain caveats. If you perform well you’re rewarded, if not you stay where you are. It’s sensible.”
Orta has been busy at Leeds this summer with a number of new signings, the likes of Ben White and Helder Costa joining to help bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s options in Yorkshire.
