Danny Mills claims that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips had an off day when it came to his delivery from set-pieces versus Sheffield Wednesday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds and England defender says that the 23-year-old has proven his ability from the likes of corners and free-kicks in recent times and that Saturday’s 0-0 draw was some way off his best.
Of the four corners that Phillips took at Hillsborough, not one found a Leeds player in the box [Whoscored], while he also blazed one free-kick over the bar when well positioned.
Mills insists that Saturday’s performance from dead balls was nothing for Marcelo Bielsa or the Elland Road faithful to worry about, saying it was just a disappointing off day for the man tasked with taking charge.
Mills told Football Insider: “I think it’s just a bit of a one-off. Several games this season we’ve seen where Kalvin Phillips’ delivery has been absolutely superb, bang on the money.
“Going back against Barnsley, coming towards the end of the game he found Nketiah. His deliver is superb, free-kicks, corners, I don’t have any issue with that.
“Sometimes you have one of those days where your radar’s a little bit off and maybe that was one of those days.”
Phillips has played 16 times for the Whites across all competitions this season, with Nketiah’s goal against Barnsley the only assist for the midfield star so far.
He has a total of 157 Leeds appearances under his belt after breaking through the youth ranks at Elland Road, with 11 goals and nine assists.
