Exclusive: Mills raves about 'Outstanding' Everton player after Newcastle loss

Danny Mills claimed Lucas Digne was a “big miss” for Everton today as Carlo Ancelotti’s side missed their opportunity to return to the top of the table.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds and Manchester City right-back hailed the “outstanding” 27-year-old for his performances to date this season.

Digne was suspended for the trip to St. James’ Park after he was sent off in the loss at Southampton last week.

He was replaced by Niels Nkounkou in the starting eleven as Carlo Ancelotti’s side slipped to their second consecutive Premier League defeat at Newcastle.

The Toffees missed the creativity of Digne and James Rodriguez, the latter sidelined due to injury.

When asked by Football Insider if Digne’s absence from the side was noticeable, Mills said: “Digne was definitely a big miss for them today.

“He has been the outstanding full-back so far. Everything he offers that team, especially going forward on the ball is absolutely superb. He is a great player.

“They have other young players like Nkounkou who can come and fill in but a player of his quality will always be missed.”

Speaking after the 2-1 loss, Ancelotti said: “They are important players missing. When you don’t have these players you have to play differently, maybe with less quality but with more focus.

“The goals we conceded, we lacked focus. We have to try to recover players for the next games.”
