Danny Mills has tipped Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score between 15 and 20 goals this season with new signing James Rodriguez behind him.
The former Leeds and Manchester City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Carlo Ancelotti has given Calvert-Lewin, 23, much-needed confidence and belief in his own game.
The centre-forward opened his account for 2020/21 campaign with the only goal of the game as the Toffees beat Spurs on Sunday.
Calvert-Lewin score 15 goals in 41 appearances last season, his career-best return, with suggestions that he deserved a call-up to the England squad.
Mills believes that the arrival of James Rodriguez, who signed a two-year deal at Goodison Park earlier this month, can bring the best out of Calvert-Lewin.
“I would expect Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score between 15 and 20 goals this season because you have got Rodriguez,” he told Football Insider. “Suddenly you have a threat from other positions.
“Calvert-Lewin has been fantastic and a lot of that is belief in the player. Any top striker will tell you that the manager has to give you that confidence. You need to know that you will keep starting games even if you do not score.
“Look at the Patrick Bamford situation. He would miss chances but Bielsa still played him and put his confidence in him and he performs off the back of that.
“Ancelotti has come in and given him the vote of confidence and that will have given Calvert-Lewin a lift. He’ll be thinking, ‘This is Carlo Ancelotti. Two-time Champions League winner. Wow.’ That just breeds confidence.”
Earlier this year, Ancelotti tipped Calvert-Lewin for greatness, he said: “Dominic has all the attributes to become one of the best strikers in England and in Europe.
“He is fast, has good skills, is strong in the air and works extremely hard for the team.”
